The morning came and we walked over to mount Sinai to get induced. I was hoping to have a natural delivery, as I had read many books and was excited to put all of the techniques I had learned into practice. Unfortunately I was not able to do that, as 6 hours into labour our babies heart beat was dropping with every contraction, and the harder the contractions were the lower the heart beat would get. After a little while of this happening the nurse pushed the emergency button and as all the doctors rushed in they decided that I needed to have an emergency C-section. At this point all I wanted to was to have my baby and make sure that he was going to be okay.
They rushed me into the operation room and within less than 4 minutes on July 29th at 8:02 Mateo Rafael VanderMeer was born, weighing 4 lbs. 3 oz. A nurse brought him over to Kyle and I to give him a quick kiss and then he immediately got taken into another room, where the doctors proceeded to intubate him and take him over to SickKids.
My mom stayed with me in the recovery room, as Kyle followed Mateo to SickKids waiting to see him and to know that he was okay. He waited and waited until finally the doctors came out and told him that they had a hard time intubating Mateo with the smallest Endotracheal tube that they had, and that he would need to go into surgery right away for his airway.
