Soon after the New Year on January 4th Mateo became very ill and ended up having a code blue called on him. This was earth shattering, as I held my baby and called his name "MATEO, MATEO" he was unresponsive, the code was called and many doctors, nurses rushed into the room to help Mateo. I cried as I watched them take him away, not knowing what was going to happen. It all seemed surreal I didn’t know if this was the last time I would see my baby again. We called our family to come up right away and there were there as fast as they could. Together we prayed and waited for hours until an ear, throat and nose doctor came out and took us into a room and let us know that Mateo had to get an emergency tracheostomy, as they were not able to intubate him when they took him to intensive care. He also said that Mateo was doing well, and that we could go see him in a little bit. We were shocked and scared but relieved that our baby was okay.

We went in to see him and he looked like a little angel, so sweet and peaceful. This was a big moment for us, as we were able to se his enchanting little face without any breathing prongs for the first time. His cheeks were so scrumptious and his eyes so captivating. We were grateful to God and to all of the staff that helped save his life. We then started taking classes to learn how to care for a baby with a tracheostomy and the uncertainty and fear slowly went away as we got more confident in suctioning, and caring for his tracheostomy.
Mateo continued to grow and get used to his new way of breathing, there was good days and bad days, but Mateo would always bright up our days with his joyous spirit and big smiles! e patiently awaited his heart surgery. The day came February 12th, Mateo had been able to go 7 months without having to have any intervention for his heart, and this was a huge accomplishment. He was able to grow and gain weight and get as strong as he needed to be to handle the surgery.
